The short answer: with the amplifier powered off, connect each channel's positive terminal to the corresponding speaker positive terminal and negative to negative. The cable itself does not create polarity; its colour, stripe, printing or ridge simply helps you keep the same conductor assigned at both ends.
A system can still produce sound when one loudspeaker is reversed, but the two channels may work against each other acoustically. Yamaha notes that incorrect polarity can make audio sound strange, while Cambridge Audio manuals describe weak, phasey sound with reduced bass as a possible result.
Identify the terminals before touching the cable
Most home amplifiers and passive speakers mark positive in red and negative in black. Some use plus and minus symbols, binding-post rings or printed labels. Photograph the rear panels before moving equipment if access is difficult.
Do not assume that left and right terminal layouts are mirrored. Read the labels for each channel. If the product manual specifies a different connector or wiring method, follow that manual.
Choose one conductor marker and stay consistent
Two-core speaker cable usually distinguishes one side with a stripe, text, ridge or colour. You may assign the marked conductor to positive or negative; consistency is what matters. Record the choice so future changes do not depend on memory.
Check every end: amplifier left, amplifier right, speaker left and speaker right. One reversed endpoint is enough to put a channel out of relative polarity.
Make a secure connection with power off
- Turn the amplifier off and disconnect mains power if the manual instructs you to do so.
- Separate the conductors neatly and expose only the amount of bare wire specified by the product maker.
- Twist loose strands together and make sure no strand can bridge adjacent terminals.
- Connect the chosen marked conductor to the same polarity at amplifier and speaker.
- Tighten the terminal securely without using excessive force.
- Repeat for the other channel, then inspect all four connections before power-up.
Use listening as a confirmation, not a substitute for inspection
Play a mono or strongly centred vocal at low to moderate level. Correctly matched channels should normally produce a stable centre image from the listening position. Then use a track with a clear bass line and listen for weight and definition.
Room reflections, unusual recordings and some speaker designs can complicate automated phase warnings. Visual inspection of the actual wiring remains the primary check. Do not reverse a correctly connected cable simply because one test track feels wide.
Polarity is different from electrical safety grounding
Speaker positive and negative terminals describe the audio output relationship; they are not instructions to alter protective earth or signal-ground wiring. Rane's interconnection guidance explicitly warns against unsafe grounding modifications and recommends leaving original safety grounding intact.
If hum or shock risk is involved, stop and consult qualified service support. Changing a speaker lead is not a remedy for a mains grounding problem.
