Read the measurement method with the number
Speaker sensitivity is commonly stated in dB SPL for a specified electrical input at a specified distance. Cambridge Audio describes it as the level produced at one metre with a stated input. Some specifications use one watt; others use 2.83 volts, which is equivalent to one watt only into 8 ohms.
That distinction matters when comparing speakers of different impedance. Do not rank an 83 dB figure against another model until the input method and distance are comparable.
Sensitivity is not efficiency, quality or maximum output
In everyday product discussions, sensitivity and efficiency are sometimes used loosely, but they are not an evaluation of tonal accuracy or musical quality. A lower-sensitivity speaker can be an intentional engineering result.
Maximum clean output also depends on power handling, driver excursion, frequency content, amplifier clipping and room gain. A single sensitivity value cannot predict all of those limits.
Distance and room conditions change what reaches you
As the listener moves farther away, direct sound level falls. Rooms add reflections, so domestic results do not follow a simple free-field calculation at every frequency. A two-metre listening position is therefore a different task from a one-metre desktop setup.
Room size, absorption and placement also influence perceived bass and clarity. Treat calculations as screening estimates and confirm them by listening at the real distance.
Amplifier headroom matters more than volume-knob position
Music contains peaks above its average level. An amplifier needs enough clean headroom for those peaks at the intended listening distance. The clock position of a volume knob cannot be compared between amplifiers because input sensitivity, source level and gain structure differ.
If sound hardens, compresses or distorts as level rises, reduce volume. More power is not a licence to ignore the speaker's rating, and a large wattage number for a different impedance may not apply.
